Eye of the Beholder

If you’ve been to any of the Hawaiian Islands, a keen eye will appreciate the natural beauty of the lush mountains, sandy beaches and those breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.  It’s awesome.  It’s like walking into a virtual postcard you become a part of, and every day the postcard changes.  Well, no wonder the native islanders are so laid back and chill, being in paradise has that natural effect on people.

Beauty In The Eye

As I was thinking about a recent visit to the island of Maui, the thought of beauty in the eye of the beholder came to mind. Almost all the people on the island seem to revel in the natural beauty of the island and its pleasantness.  And, the powerful waves and abundant life under the sea my wife an I saw on a sunset sail were amazing.  It’s a whole other world under the sea with its many creatures, plants and corals.  Yet, it’s all so beautiful, so lovely and so abundant.  Yet, there is natural beauty found everywhere, not just on Maui.  The Creator’s handiwork is everywhere we look for it.

I wondered what it takes to appreciate the natural beauty and wonders of the world and creation around us.  Like the beauty of Maui, it’s also so abundant.  Still, how often in the hustle and bustle of each day do we take the time, perhaps just a moment or two, to contemplate on the surrounding nature?  How amazing it is to hear the morning chirping of the sparrow outside our window.  Or, the sparkle of the morning dew on the hydrangea down the walkway.  I love to watch the hummingbirds sip nectar as they flit around their feeders as our cat eyes them from our patio window.  These are things I can think on where I live.

Perhaps where you live, there are similar occurrences.  If you live surrounded by concrete and asphalt within some major metropolitan city, nature just has to pop its head in to say hello.  That blade of grass growing through the sidewalk  Or, those peculiar city birds in sync side by side along the power line.  Where ever it is, nature seems to cry out – “Hey, check me out!”

Where Does Your Eye Focus?

So, think about this: What does your conscious eye focus on the most? Do you find that days pass with no substantive thought on the beauty of nature provided us by the creator?  Or, if you don’t believe in a creator, the simple awesomeness the universal forces have brought together?  With our lifestyles today it’s easy to let it go by.  If you find your eye needs to focus more on the simple pleasures of nature, take a step back and refocus.

It’s your eye, and you are the beholder.  But I guarantee if you can refocus that eye on the beauty of nature, and stay there for a moment or two, it’ll bring you to a relaxed place.  Or so, at least a better frame of mind.  And what greater way to begin or end a day than in a better frame of mind.

Ah… I will let my eye focus on Maui just for a moment in my mind.  Yes, I can already feel the sand between my toes and the gentle island breeze.  So until next time, Aloha!
